The direct measurement of liquid flow can be carried out by positive displacement flowmeter. These units divide the liquid into specific increments and then continue to flow. The total flow is the accumulation of measurement increments and can be calculated by mechanical or electronic techniques.

The velocity of kinetic energy depends on the pressure projection that makes the liquid flow through the pipe. Other influencing factors are density, viscosity and friction between liquid and inner wall of pipeline.
